The PSNI have confirmed that a one-year- old boy has died following a car crash in Co. Down.
In a statement this morningĀ PSNIĀ also confirmed that a woman aged in her 60s was also ‘seriously injured’ in the crash.
Police added that a lorry and the two pedestrians were involved in the incident.
It is understood the child was being pushed in a pram by his grandmother,Ā Belfast LiveĀ reports.
The single road traffic collision happened in the Meeting Street area of Moira on Wednesday, March 8.
PSNI Detective Sergeant Harrison said: “We received a report shortly after 1.40pm that a lorry and two pedestrians had been involved in a road traffic collision.
āOfficers attended the scene along with colleagues from the other emergency services. Sadly the boy, aged one, died at the scene.
“A woman, aged in her 60s, was taken to hospital for treatment to serious injuries.”
Detective Sergeant Harrison continued: āThe road has since fully reopened to all traffic and our investigation is now underway to establish the circumstances of the collision.
āWe are appealing to anyone who was travelling in the Meeting Street or Main Street areas at this time, or who may have witnessed the collision or captured it on their dash-cam, to contact officers in the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference 969 08/03/23.ā
Speaking about the tragedy, Alliance MLA David Honeyford told the BBC: “It’s absolutely tragic…”
He added: “The village will come together to support the family.”
Posting on Twitter, DUP MLA Emma Little-Pengelly said: “Just unbelievably heartbreaking. I know all of our thoughts, prayers and love go out this evening [Wednesday] to the family, parents and whole community dealing this terrible, terrible tragedy.”
DUP MLA Paul Givan said: “Absolutely devastating news tonight regarding the tragic accident in Moira earlier today [Wednesday]. My thoughts & prayers are with the families affected by this unimaginable tragedy.”
Posting on Twitter, Alliance MLA Sorcha Eastwood said: “I am absolutely devastated for the family that have lost a special little child in an absolutely awful incident in Moira this afternoon [Wednesday].
“My heart is just broken for them and I know we will all hold the family in prayer over the next while, God bless them all. Just devastating.”
A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 13:42 on Wednesday, 08 March 2023 following reports of an incident in the Meeting Street Area, Moira.
“NIAS despatched two Ambulances, two Ambulance Officers and the Hazardous Area Response Team.
